Street name: Leof. Nikis
Category: Event
Category in detail: Liberation of Thessaloniki
Description:
The coastal avenue of Thessaloniki was named Nikis (Victory) Avenue, because on this street the Greek troops paraded after the liberation of the city by the Ottomans in 1912. During the first Balkan war (1912-1913) Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia and Montenegro had allied against the Ottoman Empire in order to liberate the predominantly Christian Balkan territories.
On October 25, 1912, the Greek army had reached very close to Thessaloniki and demanded the surrender of the city from the Ottoman commander Hassan Taksin Pasha. He, knowing that he did not have the military strength to defend it and that in a few days Bulgarian forces would arrive, surrendered the city to the Greek army without a fight, thus saving the city from destruction.
