Description: Eleftherios Venizelos was the most important politician of the modern Greek state. He served as the country's prime minister seven times, from 1910 to 1933. He began his political career in his native Crete, where he led the Cretan Revolution, achieving independence and then the unification of Crete with Greece. He is connected with Thessaloniki by two historical events: his insistence that the Greek army should move quickly towards the city, which led to its liberation during the first Balkan war of 1912-1913, and the creation of the National Defense government in 1915, based in Thessaloniki, which led to the participation of Greece in the First World War, on the side of the allies. This participation brought significant benefits to the country which unfortunately were later lost.
