Description:
Despite pressure from Britain and France to Greece to take part in the First World War, Greece remained neutral by decision of King Constantine, a purely pro-German stance, as Constantine was a relative of the German Kaiser William II. Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos, believing that Greece's interest was to ally with Britain and France against Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire, transferred the seat of government to Thessaloniki in 1916, creating the so-called National Defense Government.
The National Defense Government led to the expulsion of King Constantine, and the participation of Greece in the First World War.
