Street name: Chalkeon
Category: Place
Category in detail: Marketplace
Description:
From the Byzantine years until recently on this street there were workshops and shops that made, repaired and traded copper items - for this reason this street is called Chalkeon Street, from the greek word for copper, “χαλκος / Chalkos”. Today there are few stores left that trade items made from copper.
On the east side of the road is a church that was built about 1000 years ago and is known as Panagia Chalkeon. Together with other Byzantine churches of Thessaloniki, it is, recognized by UNESCO, a monument of world cultural heritage.
It is interesting to note the difference in height of the street, as it is today, with the entrance of the temple - a sign of how much the level of the city has changed in the past thousand years.
