Nikephoros Phokas. Emperor of Byzantium, from 963 to 969. Leader of the campaign for the liberation of Crete from the Saracen Arabs, as Emperor he managed to expel the Arabs from Cyprus and Syria.
Throughout his reign he was constantly engaged in war campaigns, for the support of which he had imposed heavy taxes on the people but not on the wealthy landowners. For this reason he was overthrown by John II Tsimiskis.
A particularly pious Christian, he helped Saint Athanasios the Athonite to build the first monastery of Mount Athos, the present-day Great Lavra. Mount Athos, a peninsula in Halkidiki, near Thessaloniki, is one of the biggest monastic communities in Christian world.
He wanted to become a monk at the end of his life, but he was violent dethronement and assassinated.
