Category: Place
Category in detail: Historical place
Description:
At this point stood the hippodrome of Thessaloniki, part of the palace complex of Caesar Galerius. It was built during the Roman era, between the 3rd and 4th century AD and is the place where one of the darkest pages in the history of the city took place.
In 390 AD the inhabitants of the city revolted against the Gothic garrison, which was stationed in Thessaloniki, assassinating its authoritarian commander, Butericho. In the next race at the hippodrome, the Gothic garrison slaughtered 7,000 spectators, following an order from the Roman emperor Theodosius the First. Since then the hippodrome has not reopened and its building materials have been reused from time to time in repairs to the city walls.
Despite this crime, Theodosius I was proclaimed a saint of the church because he established Christianity as the obligatory and official religion of the Roman state.
