Filiki Eteria (Friendly Society) was a secret organization founded by Greeks in 1814 in Odessa, Russia, in preparation of the Revolution of 1821, for the liberation of Greece from the Ottoman Empire.
The purpose of Filiki Eteria was to raise money for the revolutionary struggle and to organize and coordinate the revolutionaries. Before the outbreak of the revolution on March 25, 1821, it had thousands of members in every area where there were Greeks, including the protagonists of the struggle, such as Theodoros Kolokotronis, Odysseas Androutsos, Papaflessas and many others.
