Category in detail: Mountain and ancient stronghold
Description:
Ithomi was an ancient fortress on the top of the homonymous mountain of Messinia. The mountain was dedicated to Zeus and at the top there was a sanctuary. The fortress of Ithomi played an important role at the end of the 7th century BC in the war between Messinia and Sparta. In 369 BC the Theban Epamineondas liberated Messinia and built at the foot of Mount Ithomi a big city called Messina, which became the capital of Messinia. Today at the top of the mountain is the old monastery of Panagia Vulkanou, which is built from the same building materials of the ancient temple of Zeus.
