He was the leader of the Social Democratic Party from 1969 to 1986 and the Prime Minister of Sweden from October 1969 to October 1976 and from October 1982 until he was assassinated in 1986 and was succeeded by Ingvar Carlsson. An advocate of democratic freedoms, Uluf Palme hosted many Greek opponents of the colonel junta in his country, and as a declared enemy of the Vietnam War, caused an international uproar in the early 1970s by not allowing American war deserters to stay in Sweden.
