Description: The most famous of Nordenskiöld's expeditions is the one that started from Tromsö in Norway on July 21, 1878. The sea voyage went north of Siberia with a view to the Bering Strait. The voyage went well until the ship froze in the ice and the crew was forced to spend the winter trapped on the ship for ten months. After the ice had loosened, they sailed south towards the Pacific Ocean. On September 2, 1879, when the expedition reached Yokohama in Japan, telegrams spread throughout the world that the Northeast Passage had been crossed for the first time.
