Description:
Asia Minor, known as Anatolia, the westernmost promontory of Asia, constitutes the greater part of modern Turkey. The 391,000 square kilometers' area is defined by the Black Sea to the north, the Mediterranean Sea to the south and the Aegean Sea to the west. Asia Minor has been a crossroad of cultures since ancient times due to the immigration. The Greek presence on the coasts of M. Asia began with the first colonization, where Ionians, Aeolians and Dorians first colonized the area and established a remarkable culture. In 1922, the Greek state failed to maintain Western Asia Minor territory due to the destruction of Smyrna (September 13, 1922), while the Treaty of Lausanne formalized Turkish sovereignty in Asia Minor.
