Eleftherios Venizelos was Prime Minister of Greece seven times, from 1910 to 1933. He started as a politician in Crete, leading the Cretan Revolution and achieving the independence of Crete and then its union with Greece. He achieved the liberation of Thessaloniki in the First Balkan War of 1912-1913, while he demanded the participation of Greece in the First World War on the side of the Allies. Greece was rewarded with the concession of the Embassy of Smyrna (1919). Venizelos was defeated in the November 1920 elections and returned to politics after the Asia Minor Disaster of 1922. With two of his initiatives (1923) - the compulsory exchange of Greeks and Turks and the Treaty of Lausanne, which defined the borders between Greece and Turkey - changed the orientation of Greek politics and established peace.
