Street name: Dardanelion
Category: Place
Category in detail: Strait
Description:
The Dardanelles (Ellispont), a narrow strait in NE Turkey, connects the Propontis with the Aegean Sea. The name was given by the ancient city, Dardanos. In the Byzantine period it was vital for the defense of Constantinople. In the First Balkan War, the Hellenic naval battle between Turkey and Greece took place there, with Greece's victory, while in 1915 the Gallipoli campaign took place, with the defeat of the Western Allies by the Turks. With the Treaty of Sevres in 1920, the Straits were demilitarized, while with the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923 they were given back to Turkey and the free passage of all foreign warships was allowed. Turkey, however, rejected her terms and militarized them, which was formalized with the Treaty of Montreux (1936).
