The street is dedicated to Lycurgus, who was a great Spartan legislator and lived around 800 B.C. He traveled to Crete, Ionia, India, Egypt and Libya, observed the way of life of the people and their laws, and on his return to Sparta wrote laws for its proper governance. Lycurgus, also, agreed with the king of Ilia, Ifitos and the king of Pisa that the Olympic Games be held every four years and that the Olympic truce be respected by all.
