Street name: Mpenaki
Category: Person
Category in detail: An old historical family of Greece
Description: The street is dedicated to the historical Benaki family, which dates back to Panagiotis Benakis, prefect of Kalamata during the Orlof revolution, of which he was a strong supporter. Panagiotis Benakis was born in Kalamata in 1700 and was the son of the Cretan Benos Psaltis and Stathoula Gerakari, daughter of Liverios Gerakari. He was a merchant and acquired a huge fortune. In 1767 he met with George Papazolis to organize an uprising of the Greeks, but it failed. After its suppression, Benakis and his associates left the Peloponnese, while his property was confiscated. After leaving his family in Kythira, he fled to Livorno, where he died of unknown causes in early 1771. His home, which was built in 1742 during the Turkish occupation and was connected to the most important events of the time, was granted to the Archaeological Service by Antonios Benakis, also known for the homonymous museum he founded in Athens.
