Description: He was the bishop of the Greek Catholic Diocese of Cluj-Gherla, cardinal, a senator by right in the Romanian Parliament and honorary member of the Romanian Academy. Bishop Iuliu Hossu had the great role of being the Herald of the Great Union: on December the 1st 1918, in Alba Iulia, and he read the Proclamation of the Union of Transylvania with Romania. He opposed the forced transfer of Greek Catholics to the Romanian Orthodox Church, which led to his conviction to years of detention in communist prisons. He was beatified by Pope Francis in 2019.
