Description: Emil Racovita was a Romanian scientist, explorer, speleologist and biologist. He is considered to be the father of bio-speleology which is the study of underground fauna flora and water. At the age of 25 he took part to an arctic expedition with Belgica (1887). In 1920 he was invited as a professor to the Faculty of Science at the University of Cluj-Napoca where he started the first bio-speleological institute in the world. He became a member of the Romanian Academy in 1920 and the chairman of this prestigious institution between 1926-1929.
