The name of the road is a reference to the events that took place in 1973 at the National Metsovio Polytechnic in Athens and the events that took place in 1973. That period, Greece was under the dictatorship of the colonels for almost 10 years. Apart from the deprivation of liberties and violence, in 1973 the dictatorship prohibited the students’ elections and imposed their obligatory/compulsory conscription. In November of 1973 the students abstained from their lessons, were fortified in the Polytechnic School and established radio station. People supported them. Street battles took place between the rebels and the police. In the night of 17th November a tank pulled down the gate, intruded into the Polytechnic School and soldiers dragged out the students. Soldiers and policemen opened fire to the students and civilians. There were a lot of dead and wounded men and women. The Polytechnic School’ s rebellion was the beginning of the end for the dictatorship which ended on 1974.
