In the area around the road there was a castle called Melissopyrgos that was completely destroyed after the last battle of the failed Greek revolution in 1770, also known by the popular name “Orlofika” which was incited by the Russians against the Ottomans during the Russo-Turkish War (1768-74). Isabella of Achaia retired to this castle after the death of her second husband, Florent of Hainaut.
Isabella of Villehardouin, (1260 -1311 or 1312) was born and spent an important part of her life in the city of Kalamata and in the castle that was the residence of the Villehardouins and the seat of the principality of Achaia, during the Frankish occupation in the 13th century. She was the eldest daughter of Prince William II Villehardouin and his main heir. She married three times and had two daughters.
Izambo became known in modern times from the novel "The Princess Izambo" by Angelos Terzakis, which is considered one of the best works of modern Greek literature.
