Mihail Kogălniceanu was a liberal statesman, lawyer historian and publicist. Between oct. 1863 and January 1865 he was the prime-minister of Romania and then the minister for internal affairs. He had a major contribution to some major reforms as the abolition of slavery and agriculture reform. He also played an important role in Romania’s decision to participate at the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878). The consequence of this war was the Independence of Romania.
After withdrawing from political life Kogalniceanu dedicated his time to studying history and served as the Romanian Academy President.
