Description:
Plutarch was a Greek historian, biographer and philosopher. He was born in Boeotia in the 40s AD, a time when Greece was under Roman rule. He was a priest of Apollo in the oracle of Delphi and responsible for the interpretation of the oracles of Pythia.
His most important work is "Parallel Lives", a series of biographies of great Greeks and Romans. He presented them in pairs, to show their similarities and common moral values. Some of them were indicative: Theseus, the founder of Athens and Romulus, the founder of Rome, the military leaders Pelopidas and Marcellus, Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar.
Plutarch's work significantly influenced later European literature. Shakespeare in Timon and Moliere in Misanthrope relied heavily on Plutarch's writings written 16 centuries earlier.
