Description: John I Tzimiskes was the senior Byzantine Emperor from 969 to 976. An intuitive and successful general, he strengthened the Empire and expanded its borders during his short reign. He was a capable leader that took measures in favor of the weakest citizens. Nephew of his predecessor Nikiforos II Phocas, he continued his campaigns in the east and neutralized the threat of the Rus, people from whom the Russians and other tribes of Eastern Europe arise. Tsimiski Street is today the most commercial street in Thessaloniki.
