Victor Hugo was a famous French writer of the 19th century, born in 1802 and died in 1885. In his most important works, "The Miserables" and " Notre-Dame de Paris" he talks about social injustice and the hypocrisy of those in power.
He was an ardent supporter of the Greek Revolution of 1821. His philhellenic action appears very strongly in a poetry collection published in 1829 entitled "The Oriental". Victor Hugo at the young age of 27, praises the effort of the Greek nation for freedom and independence. The most important poems from this collection are "The Greek boy" (L'enfant) which talks about a child who survives the destruction of Chios and "The heads of Saragio" (Les têtes du Sérail) which refers to the destruction of Messolonghi while appealing Europe to assist the just struggle of the Greeks.
