Description:
Heraklion was emperor of the Byzantine Empire from 610 until his death in 641. During his reign the Greek language became the official language of the Byzantine state.
He took over the administration of the empire at a very difficult time when the Persians and Avars had conquered many of its eastern territories, and besieged Constantinople as well. The Persians had also conquered the Holy Land and stole the Holy Cross from Jerusalem.
After long battles that lasted 14 years, he managed to eliminate the Persian danger, returning triumphant to Constantinople, having recovered all the lost lands. Soon, however, the Arab threat appears. The Arabs occupied the Holy Land and all the lands that Heraklion had recaptured, without being able to repel them successfully.
