Description: The Egnatia Road (Via Egnatia) was one of the two most important roads of the Roman Empire, connecting Rome with Constantinople, passing through Thessaloniki and the most important cities of the time, such as Durres, Veria, Amphipolis, Philippi and Traianoupolis. The Romans were famous for the roads they built in their empire, as they allowed them to transport troops quickly and easily for the time, in order to conquer new lands or suppress revolutions. At the same time, however, the Roman roads facilitated trade, creating wealth in the areas through which they passed. Today's Egnatia Street, one of the most important streets in Thessaloniki, follows the outline of the Roman Egnatia.
