Description: Lord Byron was an English aristocrat, poet, politician and one of the most important representatives of Romanticism in European literature. He is considered one of the most important English writers of the 19th century, while in Greece he is one of the most recognizable figures of the Revolution of 1821 and a national hero. Lord Byron associated his name with the movement of Philhellenism, the effort of citizens from all over the world to help the Greek Revolution of 1821 and the creation of the modern Greek state. Many philhellenes offered their fortunes, their personal services, and even their lives, for the success of the Greek Revolution. Lord Byron was the most famous Philhellene, as thanks to his publicity he greatly helped the Greek revolution not only by offering his personal fortune, but also by urging wealthy British aristocrats and the British government to financially support the struggle. He died in Messolonghi in 1924, at the age of 37.
