Street name: P. Mela
Category: Person
Category in detail: War hero
Description:
Prior to the First Balkan War of 1912, there was intense competition between Greece and Bulgaria, with the aim of increasing the influence of these countries over the inhabitants of the Ottoman-dominated region of Macedonia. This Greek-Bulgarian rivalry often led to small-scale armed conflicts between guerrilla groups.
Pavlos Melas was a Greek artillery officer, who had been sent by the Greek Government to Macedonia, to organize the Greek-minded population of Macedonia in order to resist the attacks of Bulgarian nationalist groups.
His death in 1904 after a battle with the Ottoman army made him a heroic figure in the Macedonian struggle.
